Understanding ‘Ayurveda’: The Ultimate Science of Life
The word ‘Ayurveda’ constitues of two words i.e. ‘Ayu’ + ‘Veda’. The word ‘Ayu’ represents life, it is a continous, ongoing entity that holds together the very essence of our being. It is a comprehensive term used for the sharira (our physical body), the indriya (our sense organs), the manas (our mind) and the atma (our soul). The harmonious alliance of these is what we call ‘Ayu’, one that sustains and maintains our lives. The word ‘Veda’ is dervied from ‘vid’ meaning knowledge or science.
That is to say, “Ayurveda’ would actually translate as ‘The Science of Life’. Though often misunderstood as merely the ancient medical science of India, Ayurveda in it’s true essence imparts to us, the knowledge of life, it guides us about living our life to fulfill our potential, to attain happiness both personal and wordly, to attain prosperity and how to counter anything that might cause an obstruction in our path i.e. diseases. It enlightens our path towards dharma (the customary observance or prescribed duty or virtue), artha (opulence or utility), kaama (desire or pleasure) and ultimately moksha (emancipation or liberation).
It presents itself in the form of three sutras (short precept), the ‘Hetu’ ( the causative factors for any diseases or abnormality), the ‘Linga’ (the symptoms of the diseases) and the ‘Aushadha’ (the cure in form of herbs, procedures or routines). It consists of several established principles including ‘The Tridosha’, ‘Prakirti’, ‘Panchmahabhoot’, etc., all which are explained further on our page.
The main aim of Ayurveda is primarily to protect the health of an individual thus preventing the occurrence of diseases and secondary aim is curing the diesases. With the same aim we, at Praanayurveda are dedicated to enhancing your life.
